TRAction’s Respectful Maternal Care Work Inspires Support from the Minister of Health in Tanzania

Wednesday, June 29, 2022

The USAID Mission in collaboration with TRAction and the Maternal Child Survival Program is seeking avenues to support Tanzania’s Ministry of Health Gender Community Development and Children to advance Respectful Maternal Care (RMC) nationally. This push for national action on RMC was catalyzed by the TRAction supported implementation research project in Tanzania (Staha) as well as other efforts inspired by TRAction’s work. On June 15th TRAction Technical Advisor Emily Peca traveled to Dodoma, Tanzania along with colleagues from Jhpiego/MCSP, USAID/TZ and a member of the Staha project to meet with the Minister of Health, the Honorable Ummy Mwalimu. The Minister was briefed on the study findings and more generally on the determinants and of RMC.  This included sharing findings from the TRAction-funded Staha project implemented by Ifakara Health Institute in partnership with Columbia University’s Averting Maternal Death and Disability Program. The Staha project pioneered approaches to measure the problem and identify possible solutions to addressing the high degree of mistreatment experienced by women giving birth in health facilities. The briefing was very well-received by the Minister who pledged her support and commitment to the issue of maternal health and specifically, RMC. The Minister stated her interest in building understanding and support for this issue across the Ministry. Also it was agreed that a Ministry hosted (with support from USAID and its partners) stakeholder summit to develop a national strategy to advance RMC in Tanzania would take place in the next few months.  We are optimistic that the Minister’s engagement and the stakeholder summit will be important steps in translating implementation research evidence into policies that will improve maternal care.
