Implementation Research: Tackling Disrespect and Abuse in Facility-Based Childbirth

The purpose of this request for applications (RFA) is to conduct implementation research in one or more developing countries that will be aimed at designing, testing and evaluating an approach to significantly reduce disrespectful and abusive care of women during labor and delivery in facilities. The objectives of this research are to identify the manifestations and causes of disrespect and abuse of women during labor and delivery in facilities that most directly deter skilled care utilization; design, implement, monitor and, as needed, continuously improve an approach consisting of one or more interventions  to reduce selected manifestations of disrespect and abuse in facility-based childbirth, which can be quickly, inexpensively and widely replicated and sustained in the country and region; evaluate the impact of the intervention(s) on disrespect and abuse of women during labor and delivery in facilities and on skilled care utilization; and, develop plans for adoption of interventions in regular use.
